Once upon a time, a brave soldier was returning home from the war. As he walked along the dusty road, he met an old witch. She had a crooked stick and a mysterious smile. 'Good soldier,' she said, 'would you like to become rich?' The soldier was curious and asked how. The witch pointed to a large hollow tree and said, 'Inside, you'll find treasures beyond your wildest dreams!' The soldier's eyes sparkled as he listened.
The witch explained, 'Climb down the tree, and you'll find three rooms. In each room, there's a large dog guarding a chest of coins. The first dog has eyes like saucers, the second like millwheels, and the third like towers. Place them on my apron, and they won't harm you. All I want is the tinderbox inside.' The soldier agreed, feeling a mix of excitement and adventure.
The soldier climbed into the hollow tree and found the first room. A giant dog with eyes as big as saucers looked at him. Remembering the witch's advice, he gently placed the dog on her apron. With the dog calm, he took as many copper coins as he could fit in his pockets, feeling the weight of the shiny treasure.
In the second room, the soldier met a dog with eyes like millwheels. It was even more intimidating, but again, he used the apron trick. The dog lay quietly, and the soldier filled his pockets with shimmering silver coins. His heart raced with the thrill of his adventure as he moved to the next room.
The third room held the biggest dog, with eyes like towers. The soldier was a bit nervous, but he placed the apron under it, calming the creature. He took as much gold as he could carry and finally found the tinderbox the witch wanted. Feeling triumphant, he wondered why it was so important to her.
Climbing back out, the soldier met the witch. She eagerly asked for the tinderbox, but the soldier hesitated. 'Why do you want it?' he asked. The witch refused to tell him, so he decided to keep it. In a sudden twist, the witch vanished into thin air, leaving him alone with his newfound fortune.
The soldier moved to the city, living like a king with his treasures. He bought fine clothes, grand meals, and threw lavish parties. But soon, his pockets were empty, and the coins were all spent. With no friends left, he found himself alone in a dark, empty room, feeling the weight of his loneliness.
One lonely night, the soldier remembered the tinderbox. He struck it, and to his amazement, the dog with eyes like saucers appeared. 'What do you wish, master?' it asked. The soldier realized the magic of the tinderbox and knew he could summon the dogs to help him anytime he wanted. His heart filled with hope.
With the tinderbox's magic, the soldier asked the dogs to bring him the sleeping princess. Each night, they gently carried her to his room, where the soldier admired her beauty. He never harmed her and made sure she returned safely before dawn. The princess thought it was all a strange, wonderful dream.
The princess told her parents about her dreams, and they grew suspicious. The king and queen set a plan to uncover the truth. They placed a bag of flour with a small hole in it near the princess's bed, leaving a trail for them to follow. That night, the dogs carried her once more, unaware of the clever trap.
The king and queen discovered the trail and followed it to the soldier's room. He was arrested and sentenced to hang for his misdeeds. The soldier felt hopeless, thinking his adventures were over. But just before his punishment, he asked a servant for his tinderbox, hoping for one last chance.
As the soldier struck the tinderbox, all three dogs appeared, ready to help. They scared the king's men and saved the soldier from his fate. Grateful and impressed, the king realized the soldier's courage and cleverness. He allowed him to marry the princess, and the soldier became a kind and just king, living happily ever after.
