They reached a city ruled by a proud princess who challenged suitors with riddles. If she solved them in three days, the man lost his life. If not, she would marry him.
Nine men had already failed. The prince proposed his riddle: "One slew none, and yet slew twelve." The princess could not solve it and searched all her books in vain.
She sent a maid to listen to the prince's dreams, but the servant took his place and drove her away, taking her cloak. A second maid tried the next night and lost her cloak as well.
