Long, long ago, after a great war far from home, a brave hero named Odysseus set sail across the wide blue sea with his sailors. They had been away for so long, and oh, how they wished to go home!
One day their ship came to a magical island floating high above the waves. It was the home of Aeolus, the King of the Winds. Tall cliffs rose up from the sea, and clouds swirled around the top like a crown.
Old King Aeolus welcomed Odysseus with open arms. He had a long white beard and wore purple robes covered in silver wind patterns. "Come, rest and eat," he said kindly. "Tell me of your journey."
Odysseus told the king all about the long war and how badly he and his sailors wanted to go home. Aeolus listened carefully, stroking his long beard. His eyes were full of kindness. "I can help you," he said.
Aeolus brought out a large leather bag, tied tight with a shining silver cord. "Inside this bag are all the wild, stormy winds," he explained. "I will let only the gentle West Wind blow free — and it will carry you straight home."
"But you must never, ever open this bag," warned Aeolus, looking very serious. Odysseus promised. He placed the bag carefully on the ship and thanked the kind king. Then the gentle West Wind began to blow, and away they sailed!
Day after day, the West Wind blew them softly across the sparkling sea. The water was calm and blue. The sun shone warm and golden. Odysseus stood at the front of the ship, watching for home.
Nine days and nine nights they sailed perfectly. Odysseus was so tired from watching over the bag that his eyes grew heavy. On the ninth night, he could stay awake no longer. He lay down and fell fast asleep.
The sailors looked at the big leather bag. "What is inside?" whispered one. "It must be treasure!" said another. "Gold and jewels, surely!" They tiptoed closer and closer, their eyes wide with curiosity.
One sailor reached out and pulled the silver cord. WHOOOOSH! All the wild winds burst out of the bag at once! They screamed and howled, spinning the ship around and around. Odysseus woke up with a cry.
The terrible storm pushed them far, far away from home. The waves were as tall as mountains. The sky turned dark and angry. Everything they had sailed for in nine long days was lost in a single moment.
When the storm finally calmed, Odysseus looked out at the empty sea. Home was far away again. He was sad, but he did not give up. "We will find our way," he said bravely. And so their long adventure continued.
