Little Emborg lived in a cozy wooden house at the edge of a green meadow, where wildflowers danced in the summer breeze. She had bright blue eyes, sunny blonde braids, and a smile that could warm the coldest winter day. Emborg loved her mother more than anything in the whole wide world.
One morning, Emborg's mother placed something very special around her neck — a small coin on a string. 'This is a luck penny,' her mother said with a smile. 'It is the first money you have ever had, and it will bring you good fortune wherever you go.' Emborg held the little coin tightly and felt very grown up indeed.
Emborg had a wonderful idea. Her mother's birthday was coming soon, and she wanted to find the most perfect present. 'I shall go out into the world,' she said bravely, 'and buy something beautiful for Mother!' She put on her blue dress, tied her braids with ribbons, and set off down the country road all by herself for the very first time.
The road wound through green hills dotted with birch trees and buttercups. Emborg walked and walked, singing a little song, when she met a fluffy white sheep standing by a stone wall. 'Good morning, little sheep!' said Emborg. 'Good morning, little girl!' the sheep replied. 'Where are you going on this fine day?'
'I am looking for a birthday present for my mother,' said Emborg. The sheep nodded kindly. 'Then you must have some of my soft wool! It is the warmest, softest wool in all the land, and your mother can make something lovely with it.' The sheep shook its fleecy coat, and a bundle of the softest wool fell gently into Emborg's arms.
Emborg thanked the sheep and continued on her way. Soon she came to a green pasture where a brown cow stood chewing clover. 'Good morning, dear cow!' said Emborg. 'Good morning!' mooed the cow. 'I heard you are looking for a present. Please take some of my fresh, sweet milk for your mother.' And the cow filled a little pail with the creamiest milk.
Further along the road, Emborg met a friendly gray goat nibbling on some grass beside a babbling brook. 'A present for your mother?' said the goat. 'Why, I have just the thing — a round of my very best cheese! It is creamy and delicious.' The goat trotted to a cool stone shelf and brought back a small golden wheel of cheese.
Next, Emborg came upon a plump red hen scratching in the dirt outside a little barn. 'Cluck, cluck!' said the hen. 'I know what mothers love! Fresh eggs, still warm from the nest!' The hen led Emborg to her cozy nest and carefully placed three brown eggs, one by one, into Emborg's apron pocket.
As the road climbed higher into the hills, Emborg met the most magnificent animal she had ever seen — a great reindeer with wide, branching antlers that looked like the branches of a winter tree. 'Little traveler,' the reindeer said in a deep, gentle voice, 'I wish to give your mother something truly special.' And with a graceful bow, the reindeer laid a pair of beautiful shed antlers at Emborg's feet.
Emborg looked at all the wonderful gifts piled in her arms — soft wool, creamy milk, golden cheese, warm eggs, and magnificent antlers. Her eyes grew wide. 'But I haven't spent my luck penny at all!' she laughed. 'Every animal gave me a present for free! How very kind they all are!'
Emborg hurried home as fast as her little legs could carry her. When she arrived, she spread all the gifts on the kitchen table. 'Happy birthday, Mother!' she cried. 'The animals of the countryside sent you presents!' Her mother's eyes filled with happy tears as she hugged Emborg tightly.
'My darling Emborg,' her mother whispered, 'the luck penny brought you the greatest luck of all — you discovered how much kindness there is in the world.' Emborg touched the little coin around her neck and smiled. She knew now that the very best gifts come not from spending money, but from the generous hearts of friends, both big and small.
